With a new year upon us, many aspire to get healthier, more energetic, and fit. However, the plethora of information out there can often lead to overwhelm and stress. The pandemic has left many gym/barre/yoga/kickboxing enthusiasts stranded with nothing to do but nervous pace walking, Kardashian binge-watching, and sourdough baking. Just thinking about that time brings shudders down our spine. 

Luckily, necessity gave birth to innovation; and many studios turned to VR technology to stay afloat. From March 2020 to October 2020, the sales of fitness equipment and gadgets doubled, according to NDP retail data. Similar to how our daily work and social activities turned to Zoom, fitness studios pivoted to live streaming technology to bring high-impact workouts to their customers. This trend is not going away either. 

For example, Lululemon Athletica recently released their virtual at-home studio equipment—the Mirror, which at approximately $1000, gives people access to thousands of on-demand workout classes—all from home. 

 

Health Trend #2: Mental Health and Self-Care Takes Precedent 

The word “health” has been traditionally attributed to the physical body. In 2023, the focus on how the mind impacts the body will only grow stronger. Close to half of the participants in a recent study between 18-24 stated that they worked out to improve their mental health. 

Mental health problems, like depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, can lead to nutrition deficiencies, chronic fatigue, and weight-related problems. According to a whitepaper done by Deloitte, stress and burnout have been increasing rapidly in Millennials and Gen Zs, which can adversely impact gut health, leading to bloating, heartburn, indigestion and malabsorption of critical nutrients.
